Jackson's shelfies age 2.5-3

Updated: Jun 4, 2021

This post is for all of our shelfies that we post on Instagram along with all the links to materials and products! Firstly I will add that the yoto player is a permanent fixture and won't be linked on the shelfies. If you do want a yoto player you can purchase one here.

There are a few items where I have linked to similar items if I haven't been able to get links to the ones we have. Also DIY materials will link to purchasable options as well as any relevant blog posts about how I made the DIY's. Some are gifted or second hand and I don't know where they are from!

With all the Christmas mayhem honestly didn’t get the chance to sit and fully observe but as a toddler does, huge interest in everything new he got for Christmas, the only thing he still touched on the shelf was the dinosaurs so they stayed!

2. Play food tray-Language-For playing I spy sound game

3. Dinosaurs-Science-He’s still learning to differentiate them and uses them daily

4. Magnatiles-Open ended play-these are new, and are fascinating and actually challenging for him to understand how they go together

5. Texture match board-Sensorial-some look quite similar so the only way to identify is through touch.

6. Geoboard-Math-really good fine motor fun but we haven’t explored it yet! Will be great for logical thinking and imagination.

7. Magnetic trains-No real reason other than he loves them and he enjoys lining them up and sorting them due to the sensitive period for order.

8. Screw board-Practical life-Jax is obsessed with diy and anything to do with tools but this is also challenging! As some need the screwdriver others the spanner etc.

9. Construction vehicle puzzles-Cognitive & Hand eye coordination-these are from melissa and doug and all puzzles are great for fine motor, problem solving, cognitive skills etc, we just happen to be construction mad in this house!

2 Years 7 Months

2. Doorbell house-Fine motor/Problem solving/Enveloping schema- This comes with 4 dolls and this has already been on and off the shelf 3 times just this morning! It’s definitely nourishing his current schematic play of enveloping.

3. Dinosaurs-Science/Language-These have been on the shelf for about 2.5 months now! They are still being used a lot, he now knows all the names but still enjoys imaginative play with them.

4. Magnatiles-Open ended play-These are also staying on the shelf from our last rotation as they are still being used most days.

5. Construction nomenclature cards-Language-Per his interest in construction vehicles.

6. Tambourine & recorder-Music-The sensitive period for music is age 2-6 and jax is only just showing an interest in making his own music and rhythm so now seemed a good time to introduce some instruments to the shelf.

7. Bead stair-Math-I’m introducing this diy bead stair even though it’s not traditionally introduced until much later because I feel it’s more suiting to his current development than red rods and number rods.

8. Space search box-Science/Sensorial-This box from kiwico is great! You can get 50% off a subscription through this link! It serves as a stereognostic box to work on the sense of touch, and also it unfolds into a shape matching puzzle with the felt counterparts.

9. Matryoshka dolls-Sensorial-It helps discriminate size and also it’s great for their sense of order at this age.

2 Years 7 Months

2. Weighted numbers-Math/Sensorial-Each number gets slightly heavier to solidify that 10(heaviest) really is more than 1 (lightest)

3. Drill board-Practical life/hand eye coordination-Jax LOVES tools and anything DIY and he asked for this so it’s on the shelf. 🙂

4. Magnatiles-Open ended/imaginative play-They are still being used most days for various reasons because his imaginative play is really emerging and also for his enveloping schema making doors

5. Postman kit - Kiwi co discount here-Enveloping schema/gross motor/sensorial-This seemed logical because of the enveloping schema Jax is currently exploring and because it can get him “posting” all over to get some extra gross motor happening.

6. Knobbed cylinders block 4-Sensorial-Jax enjoys these and he is enjoying discriminating types of activites currently and this block is new to him.

7. Rainbow blocks-Colour mixing/Light exploration-This is another one Jax asked for and he does use them everyday he doesn’t really build with them very much but he likes looking through them and stacking them.

8. Music box-Music-This is a lovely little music box that he can see how it works as he uses it and it’s the perfect size for his hands I LOVE this thing.

9. Fire truck puzzle & fire truck-Problem solving/Hand eye coordination/Fine & Gross motor-This is one of @melissaanddougtoys puzzles, but because there’s 4 in a box there’s no picture for reference which Jax likes for puzzles so I just got a fire engine out to help him see what the puzzle was for and to push around and get moving.

2. Planets & cards-Science/Language-Jax has widened his interest recently from just the moon to other planets so I made these for him and printed and laminated the cards 🌍

3. Melissa and Doug puzzles-Hand eye coordination/Fine motor- I always try to incorporate some type of puzzle as they’re really beneficial for a lot of areas 🧩

4. Magnatiles-Open ended play-honestly they’re not used every day at this point but anytime we “need something” to build on play we go straight to magnatiles so they’ve stayed 💡

5. DIY sandpaper letters-Language- Traditional Montessori material this is set 3 for us, I made these ages ago with card and glitter glue they are out because jax is interested in reading the letters in his books currently 📖

6. Knobbed cylinders block 1-Sensorial- Jax wanted block 1 back so we did 🙂

7. Car stacker-Math-This is from @melissaanddoug and Jax LOVES this thing, they can be stacked by colour and number and the pegs make for great fine motor practice 🚗

8. Music box-Music/Sensorial-Jax is still enjoying watching how this works so it’s stayed, but he also has his guitar available at the moment but it’s too big for the shelf 🎶

9. Geo board-Math/Fine motor-This material is great for fine motor but also builds onto geometry. Jax is currently enjoying working on getting the bands on rather than making specific shapes. 🔷

2. Music box-Music/Fine motor-Jax is still enjoying this little music box and the wrist motion used is importing for future writing

3. Kiwi co colours game-Kiwi co discount here-Sensorial/Gross motor- The idea is a matching colour bingo type game, but we make up our own games with the circles dice and cards!

4. Magnatiles-Open ended play- This has been the go to activity for a couple days now mainly building different vehicles

5. Cutting strips- Practical life/ Fine motor/Hand eye coordination - Cutting is an important life skill and the hand eye coordination requires a lot of concentration, as you can tell jax has been doing this one a lot already

6. Letter to object puzzles-Language- Jax has been really interested with written language and this kind of provides the Montessori I spy game but a bit more abstract

7. Movable alphabet alternative-Language-Jax is utterly obsessed with “writing” and spelling lately and has been using the letters of his alphabet puzzle to write words, he even wrote his first word independently the other day! So this was a no brainer however the colour are wrong and I’m going to change them soon.

8. Knobbed cylinders block 1 & 2-Visual discrimination/Sensorial- It’s taken a few rotations for these to really become interesting for Jax, and he can do both without much effort even in one tray but I’ll let him do them a while longer before moving to block 3

9. Wooden numbers & counters-Math-Now really we should be on number rods but currently we don’t have them, however he seems to of started missing the number 6 so hoping this could help and I also used the counters for a magnatile coin drop

🧺Metal inset-Language/fine motor-I put this out because Jax loved a stencil set he got in his @learningclubsb box

🧺Nuts & bolts-Fine motor/sensorial-Not the traditional set but the colour adds more difficulty and Jax is enjoying it daily this is from our toolbox from @melissaanddouguk

🧺Alphabet lotto tray-Language/Phonemic awareness-This is actually part of a board game from @orchardtoys but it’s perfect as a sound game on the shelf

🧺Teeth & brush-Practical life/sensorial-This has been a big help getting Jax to understand to brush the back side of his teeth! We will learn the names soon as well. This set including the tray is from @bbbmontessoritoys

🧺Magnatiles-Open ended/Imaginative pay- These may as well be a permanent fixture at this point, we just don’t tire of them in this house.

🧺Vehicle puzzle blocks-These are fun because when it matches up properly it makes the vehicle sound which is what Jax towards to to know if he got it right it’s from @melissaanddougtoys

🧺Knobbed cylinders block 1,2,3&4-Visual discrimination/Sensorial- We have all the blocks now and it’s providing more challenging for him! If he struggles too much I may remove block 1 so he can focus on the others.

🧺Animal land, air & water activity-Science/Language-It helps identify where the different animals live and move as well as providing the land and water language for the upcoming geography and cultural materials and activities

2 Years 10 Months

2. DIY Sandpaper globe-Language/geography-I put this out because Jax was interested in the continent globe and this comes first this is a DIY

3. Sound cylinders-Sensorial-These are a DIY version but Jax is really into noise and sounds at the moment and I thought this would be a good challenge for him

4. Toothbrushing tray-Practical life-This set is from @bbbmontessoritoys and is part of a free giveaway on my page currently so go and enter! 🎁

5. Magnatiles-Open ended/Imaginative play- These may as well be a permanent fixture at this point, we just don’t tire of them in this house.

6. Sandpaper letters and sand tray-Language/Sensorial-Jax loves this activity so much and he can write so many letters now!

7. Geometry puzzle-Math/Sensorial-This is a set from @bbbmontessoritoys bb and Jax really enjoys it it requires a lot of concentration and provides great exposure to shape names. Also part of the giveaway 🎁

8. Knobbed cylinders-Sensorial/Fine Motor-We have all the blocks now and Jax wasn’t really using them much but he asked to keep them out so I did. Follow the child!

9. Vehicle puzzles-Cognitive skills-Again, Jax asked for this to be on the shelf even though he honestly could not care less about doing these kinds of puzzles so we’ll see how he interacts 🤷‍♀️ these are from @melissaanddouguk

  1. Cement truck-Gross motor-Jax has always liked spinning things and construction so his cement truck is a firm favourite

  2. DIY Sandpaper globe & Land/water form cards-Language/geography-Jax grasped land and water really quickly and is really into matching atm so I thought it’d be a good extension to learn the forms and match them with the globe!

  3. Planets & cards-Sensorial-These are a DIY and if I’m being honest, these are a complete wildcard 😂

  4. Vehicle puzzles-Cognitive skills-To my surprise Jax has actually done these quite a few times and is taking much more autonomy over it!

  5. Magnatiles-Open ended/Imaginative play- These may as well be a permanent fixture at this point, we just don’t tire of them in this house.

  6. Shape matching eggs-Language/Sensorial-Jax loves these eggs, he’s still quite into shapes and is enjoying matching currently so this was a no brainer

  7. Screw board-Practical life/Hand eye coordination-Jax specifically asked for this, he loves tools and fixing things and this is still somewhat challenging for him

  8. Music basket-Sensorial-We are in a sensitive period for music and it shows through the fact that every noise Jax makes is “music” so I thought I’d put a few out

  9. Tangram puzzle-Memory/problem solving-I thought this would be fun as it’s more about memorising how it did work before and it’s a bit different.

2 Years 11 Months

  1. Music basket-Sensorial- We are in full force with the music sensitive period here so I've been keeping out instruments for Jax to use most rotations

  2. Tool set-Practical life/Imaginative play-I personally hate this tool set I'd rather he use our nice wooden set but, Jax loves this and I follow his lead!

  3. DIY Continent Globe-Culture/geography-Jax really enjoyed the sand and water globe but it was short lived so I thought I'd bring out the continent globe to expand a little

  4. Vehicle Puzzle-Cognitive/Problem Solving-Jax specifically asked for this, and did the puzzle by himself after some struggles. I am going to change the presentation for it though to make it a bit simpler

  5. Magnatiles-Open ended/Imaginative play- These may as well be a permanent fixture at this point, we just don’t tire of them in this house.

  6. Knobbed cylinders-Sensorial-Jax has been lining things up by size as well enclosing and containing things and he got bored of these last time before full mastery of all 4 so I'm phasing them back in for another rotation

  7. Nailing activity-Practical life/Gross & Fine motor-Nailing has always been something Jax enjoys, I think mostly because it's a great stress reliever, but this wood has turned out to be way to hard for him so I will find something else to make it easier for him to succeed!

  8. Elipse metal inset-Jax is still new to metal insets so I wanted to keep it simple with just one, but i bought this out because he has been tracing outlines and inside bottle tops, cups etc so it made sense!

  9. Farm Vehicles-All of a sudden there is a huge interest in farm vehicles and animals both at home and nursery so these are staying for a little while longer!
